Kaïgama, the leading educational farm for agroecology
Background & Justification
The project is based on alarming facts: the impact of soil degradation affects two-thirds of arable land in these regions, and has an economic cost of 1% of GDP. This degradation has harmful effects on soil fertility, farmers’ incomes and social cohesion (rural exodus, unemployment).
Efforts made by the State and local populations to combat land degradation have not produced significant results.
In addition, the East and Far North regions have a high prevalence of food insecurity. In addition to low agricultural productivity caused by increasingly low and irregular rainfall, household incomes are low due to poor access to markets. Agro-ecology initiatives seem to be bearing fruit. However, the lack of awareness of agroecology among decision-makers and the lack of evidence that agroecology can generate additional income have long limited its scaling-up.
