Bertoua residents get behind organic broiler farming

On February 14, 2025, SAILD organized an information day on organic broiler production at the Center for the Promotion of Women and Families in Bertoua, in the East Cameroon region.

The Support Service for Local Development Initiatives (SAILD) held an information day on organic broiler rearing, with the aim of encouraging the people of Bertoua, and in particular women, to adopt sustainable agriculture. The event, which brought together some 100 participants, was marked by theoretical presentations and practical demonstrations moderated by Appolinaire TETANG, agricultural engineer at SAILD.

NJI NANA, a zootechnical engineer, detailed the production stages, the feed and the prophylactic program to be followed to ensure that the birds remain organic until they are made available for consumption. “There are innovative nutritional formulas for feeding organic broilers. These formulas incorporate natural ingredients such as corn, soy, fish powder, shellfish powder and black fly powder, adapted to the different development phases (growth, start-up, finishing)” she explained.

Selecting natural ingredients

According to the expert, a natural antibiotic can be developed from Moringa leaves, aloe vera, thyme, papaya seeds, ginger and turmeric, as a preventive measure for hen health. In addition, practical workshops enabled stakeholders to master feed formulation and the composition of organic prophylactic products. In addition, Biawume, an organic chicken producer, shared her experience in the field. She demonstrated that environmentally-friendly practices can both improve product quality and ensure food security for communities.

This information day on organic broiler rearing, part of the implementation of specific “Gender” activities of the “Knowledge Center for Organic Agriculture and Agroecology in Africa” (KCOA) project funded by the German GIZ Cooperation, enabled the people of Bertoua to acquire essential skills in sustainable agriculture in Cameroon.
