DENG DENG FOREST LANDSCAPE RESTORATION ON THE MOVE

From July 22 to August 1, 2024, SAILD organized work sessions in the Tête d’éléphant, Lom 1, Kambokassi, Hona and Mansa villages in the East Cameroon region.

Assessing the relationships and influences of each stakeholder group on actions to restore the forest landscape of the Deng Deng National Park (PNDD), and facilitating data collection for the PNDD Landscape Restoration Opportunity Assessment study are the main objectives targeted by the Support Service for Local Development Initiatives (SAILD) during ten days of work in East Cameroon.

With this in mind, the NGO, through Desouza Feujio, head of the “Participatory Restoration of the Deng Deng Nation Park Forest Landscape” project funded by the International Climate Initiative (IKI) Program, organized a scoping meeting on the Restoration Opportunity Assessment Methodology (ROAM) for the Park landscape on July 23, 2024, at the Bertoua GIZ office.

It was attended by the Departmental Delegate of the Ministry of the Environment, Nature Protection and Sustainable Development of the Republic of Cameroon (MINEPDED), the Representative of the Bélabo Town Hall and the Head of the GIZ Bertoua office.

The aim was to present the project to the administrative and political authorities, and to review the study methodology developed by consultants Muller PASSALE and Rachel KENEMBENI. At the end of the working session, the key players in the restoration of the PNDD were identified and their roles clearly defined. Similarly, the orientations formulated for the efficient completion of the study and the proposals for restoration activities put forward by the participants were retained. In particular, socio-cultural, anthropological and economic information helped to reframe the pre-established study methodology.

MEOR survey data collected

After this day of consultation, the consultants and a team from SAILD, accompanied by an agent from the conservation department, visited the villages of Tête d’éléphant, Lom 1, Kambokassi, Hona and Mansa from July 24 to August 31, 2024. Now well equipped, they have fully fulfilled the reasons for their trip. In particular, they collected data for the MEOR studies and participatory land-use mapping according to the methodologies described by the consultants.

SAILD visited the same region, in the arrondissements of Belabo and Betare Oya, from July 08 to 13. The aim was to raise awareness among partners and government departments involved in landscape management in the Deng Deng National Park, as well as communities living near the protected area.

These multiple activities implemented by SAILD are part of the “Participatory restoration of the Deng Deng National Park forest landscape” project. An initiative supported by the International Climate Initiative Program (IKI), with funding from the Federal Ministry of Economics and Climate Protection (BMWK) and the Federal Foreign Office (AA).
