The Support service for local development initiatives (SAILD) organized a training workshop from 05 to 06 September 2024 in Bertoua in the East region.
Some fifteen people from villages bordering the Deng Deng National Park (PNDD ), including Tête d’éléphant, Lom1, Hona, Kambokassi and Mansa, took part in the workshop. The meeting brought together chiefs and communities from the 05 target villages. For two days, these local communities involved in the management of the PNDD landscape were sensitized to forest landscape restoration in order to prepare them to better contribute to the restoration of degraded forest areas in the park landscape.
The working session, led by the SAILD team, enabled them to familiarize themselves with the concepts of restoration and to become aware of its environmental and socio-economic benefits. In addition, the interactive sessions enabled stakeholders to better assimilate the principles of restoration and its multiple stakes for the landscape.
At the end of the workshop, local communities expressed their satisfaction at having a better understanding of restoration. However, they also pledged to develop sustainable agricultural practices in order to contribute effectively to the protection of the PNDD landscape.
Initiated to solve the problems weighing on the protected area, this training follows on from the last NDPD management assessment carried out in 2017. Using theIntegrated Management Effectiveness Tool (IMET), it uncovered the causes of degradation within Deng Deng National Park; including agricultural activities practiced by local communities.
In response to this situation, SAILD implemented the PNDD Participatory Forest Landscape Restoration project, aimed at contributing to the community-based restoration of degraded forest areas in the park landscape. The project was funded by the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ), as part of the IKI (International Climate Initiative) Small Grants program.
